The year 9 football team played their first game of the season last Wednesday. The boys strolled to a comfortable victory against St Julian’s Comprehensive School, winning the match 4-0. The game was very important as it was the first round of the Welsh Schools Cup competition.
It didn’t take long for our boys to get back into the swing of things. They had loads of early possession and it seemed only a matter of time before they made the break through.
With just 10 minutes of play gone, midfield general Joshua Wall cut open the St Julian’s defence with a superb pass, to find striker Morgan Griffiths in yards of space in front of goal. Morgan took one touch out of his feet to settle himself before slotting the ball past the keeper. Ebbw Fawr were 1-0 up!
The game continued to be played in the same fashion, Ebbw Fawr being the dominant side. After making 3 substitutions just after half time, the boys who came onto the field made an instant impact. Our two new centre midfielders, Zak Cook and Jordan Edwards both linked up very well which led to Jordan scoring 2 quick fire goals. Our final goal was scored late in the game by our other substitute Liam Owen, who was very deserving of his goal.
Due to the quality and enthusiasm of the squad, this result and performance has shown the strength in depth of our year 9’s. Each and every player played their part in this impressive victory.
The Man of the Match award was given to Ebbw Fawr left back, Dafydd Shaw who played superbly well at left back keeping the St Julian’s winger at bay.
The boys and I are looking forward to the season ahead and I shall keep you all informed on their progress.
