Invitation to Holocaust Memorial Event
The event will still take place on 27 January, between 18:15 and 20:00 in Beaufort Theatre (NP23 5QQ). This year’s theme will be “Keep the Memory Alive”.
This will be the third successive year in which the Council has hosted this ceremony and it has been very well received and attended the previous 2 years. It is an opportunity for students, as well as members of the public to learn about the Holocaust and to understand it’s context in today’s society (hate crime etc).
The speaker this year will be Mr Heini Gruffudd, who’s family suffered persecution during the Second World War. Heini has a fascinating story to tell and I would encourage each school to send representation.
The agenda is as follows:
+ Welcome from the Leader of the Council (5 mins)
+ A short explanation of why we are here and what the Holocaust is by a young person (mentioning all subsequent genocides) (5 mins)
+ 2 or 3 short films (10/15 mins each) (30-40 mins)
+ A talk about the Holocaust Heini Gruffudd (20-30 mins)
+ A speech by the Youth Mayor (5 mins)
+ Poem reading by a young person – Auschwitz by Charles N Whittaker (2 mins)
+ Light a candle in memory of Alain Bajtel (our Guardian of Memory) and all others who perished (3 mins)
+ Closing statements (10 mins)
I do hope that you are able to support this event. It is important that we recognise the atrocities that some faced and this is our opportunity to do so, while also learning for the future.
