Narrowly missing thousands of asteroids, comets and meteors, 30 of our Year 8 and 9 pupils recently navigated the Solar System in a stunning ‘3D Space’ presentation held at the Showcase Cinema in Nantgarw on Tuesday 17th March as part of the British Science Week.
As the pupils sat with their 3D glasses in place, they were treated to ‘fly -bys’ through the cosmos, they flew dangerously close to the Sun, they watched massive earth-asteroid impacts and they experienced the ‘births’ and ‘deaths’ of the stars.
This event was funded the ‘University of South Wales’, ‘AstroCymru’ and ‘First Campus’ . It was hosted by Professor Paul Roche who held the students spell bound as he extolled the wonders of the Universe and answered many of their probing questions.
Due to the past interest generated by our students, over the coming months our Learning Community will organise and host an astronomy club with visiting speakers from Cardiff University, the University of South Wales, and also from our own local organisation – HOVAS (the Heads of the Valleys Astronomical Society).
Pupils and parents are warmly welcome to attend these events, please watch this ‘SPACE’, come along and experience something truly ‘out of this world’.
Dates of upcoming events will be posted on our website.
