Year 6 students attended sessions in our secondary phase over the past four weeks to get a little taste of what Year 7 has in store for them. On Monday 22nd June, the History Department welcomed 23 Year 6 students who will be joining us in September. The day started with an intriguing mystery which involved the pupils working as a team to discover how they could use evidence to determine who the owner of a lost bag was. This was followed by a family tree lesson on the Tudors.
The pupils next session with the History Department on Monday June 29th revolved around a carousel lesson based on the local History of Ebbw Vale during The Great War 1914-18. Pupils were given the opportunity to undertake research on some of the local heroes (William Williams, John Williams and James Fynn) who had been awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery and endurance during the war. Year 6 also had the chance to discover what trench life was like through research and analysis of famous war poems by ‘John McCrae,’ ‘Wilfred Owen’ and ‘Edward Thomas.’
The students had a real taste of secondary life and we hope that they are excited for the new school year in September 2015!
