Students at Ebbw Fawr Learning Community were today celebrating success across three age groups with students gaining their GCSE qualifications.
Year 11 students achieved a 44% pass rate at 5 A*- C GCSE grades including English & Mathematics. Last years combined scores for the two Ebbw Vale secondary schools that closed was 39% and the result was above the new school’s externally set target.
A significant number of students achieved exceptional results – amongst those were Hollie Parfitt who gained 5A* and 7A’s, while Tayla-Lee Dix gained 3A* and 5A’s
Director Graeme Harkness said
“This really is a tremendous set of the results for a large number of students. They and the whole staff team have worked incredibly hard to achieve them. We started on four sites last September with two building projects on-going and throughout the year we have remained focused on increasing our academic performance. With the transfer to the new secondary phase buildings in the next couple of weeks we have laid a firm foundation for future success.”
Not to be out done by the Year 11 students, large numbers of students in Year 10 and even Year 9 have also celebrated success. 60 students gained an early GCSE in Mathematics while 26 students achieved Welsh and 44 passed Religious Studies all at grade C or above. Meanwhile 5 students gained a A*-C grade in Astronomy two years early and another 34 students achieved BTEC Sports Studies.
Secondary Phase Director Phil Collins said,
“We are delighted for all our students; they have been supported by staff and parents to set new standards for the area; coupled with the highest attendance rates in Blaenau-Gwent across both primary and secondary phases we can certainly say the 3-16 school has been a terrific success this year.”
