On Thursday 12th March Students from our STEM club visited the Birmingham NEC for the National Big Bang Fair. They spent the day taking part in interactive activities, exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through a hands on approach.
The Big Bang fair is the largest celebration of STEM subjects for young people in the UK. At its heart, the big bang fair is about careers and futures and highlights the exciting possibilities that exist for young people with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths backgrounds. It’s about the contribution they, with the right motivation, can make to the UK economy and to society in general.
Pupils were given the opportunity to take part in numerous activities making the STEM subjects come to life. Highlights of the day included programming a Dr. Who Darlek; making musical fruit using a makey makey invention kit; exploring hydrogel polymers; building robot drones; exploring microbes; analysing fuel samples of formula 1 cars through gas chromatography; using airplane simulators and competing in maths events to open a safe and win sweets.
Ebbw Fawr students represented their school in style with 3 students (Faith Holbrook, Rebecca Rees and Jordan Bidgway) securing a spot on the leader board for creating a diamond structure in record times.
It was excellent to see our students having such a fabulous time exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths! As the day was such a success, we are hoping to make this an annual event for the Ebbw Fawr Learning Community STEM Club.
