Religious Studies is about exploring how to live a fulfilled life and the diverse range of people with whom we share the planet. Religious Studies at Ebbw Fawr 3-16 is highly popular amongst the students and is characterised by dynamic and innovative teaching and topical subject matter.
Our Religious Studies Department strives to open the minds of pupils to the diversity of beliefs, traditions and culture. The department also encourages students to reflect upon their own responses to the world in which they live.

“when employing staff look out for students of Religious Studies – they are usually very solid, reliable, thinking people who are likely to have good logical skills and also be very people orientated”.
Religious Studies will teach you the life skills of critical thinking, evaluation, cultural understanding and empathy. By studying different religious teachings, rituals, stories, and beliefs, we come to understand how different communities of believers—past and present, East and West—have used their religious traditions to shape, sustain, and transform themselves.
The study of religion helps you to learn how to think critically, listen empathetically, speak thoughtfully, and write clearly—all skills that will be of great use no matter what you go on to do in life. It will also help you to better live and work in our increasingly diverse society and global world. Students of religion go on to careers in a wide variety of fields including teaching, medicine, social service, law, journalism, international business, diplomacy, and, of course, religious professions of various kinds.
Key Stage 3
In Years 7 & 8, learners explore the phenomenology of religion through the religious traditions of Judaism, Buddhism and Christianity. In Year 9, learners investigate a number of world issues and both religious and secular responses these. The department aims to bring issues to life by inviting guest speakers into school.
Key Stage 4
All learners in Key Stage 4 choose one of our highly popular GCSE courses (Short Course or Full Course) and will scrutinise a number of current topical issues ranging from Abortion to Animal Rights. These issues will be studied from both a Buddhist and Christian perspective, as well as taking into account secular and legal opinion.
The Religious Studies department has access to a wealth of school resources, including Chromebooks and laptops. In addition to this, the department makes use of wider school resources, including the School Library and ICT suites to enrich the learner’s experience.
